Cyprus in the modern world coincides with one of the most intense periods confronting Cyprus since its reluctant independence in 1960 and certainly partition in 1974. Although most of the contributions were assigned before this momentous period began, they lose none of their relevance and potency, as the issues they address are pertinent irrespective of the prospects for a settlement on the Cyprus problem.
